Two Years Later

1st June.

Two years since we set off on our ‘6-12month adventure’ to god knows where.

Two years since we swapped our wardrobes for 10kg backpacks stuffed with a Lonely Planet travel guide to India,100% deet and malaria tablets.

Travelling
1st June 2015. The day we left home…

Two years since we got excited about buying mosquito nets that we’ve used an entire three times (bloody worth it though). Two years since we bought the most hideous walking sandals available on the internet.

And two years since I got my Japanese Encephalitis injection (unnecessarily) in the bum.

1st June. Two years since we left England and boarded the plane to India with the vague plan of travelling through South East Asia before heading to Australia. Little did we know that two years later we’d still be going, with only our backpacks, missing toenails, a ripped achilles and each other for company.

Taj Mahal
One of our first stops – the Taj Mahal

1st June. Two years ago we set off travelling. And what a two years they have been. We’ve visited temples, forts and national parks. We’ve found Snoop Dog in a tuk tuk, rendered people unconscious with our farts and been diagnosed with ‘a chapati heart’. We’ve swam with sharks, manta rays and turtles, battled with flying things, hurdled dinosaurs and been bitten on the woo by mosquitos. We’ve been chased by rabid dogs, found people masturbating in bushes and ridden on camels. We’ve had the worst £1.50 haircuts ever, fell down squatter toilets and had cockroaches in our kettle. We’ve seen fascinating, beautiful things and witnessed events that have made our hearts stop. We’ve picked up parasites, rashes and lost numerous toenails. We’ve almost fallen off buses, had emergency lie downs on train tracks and experienced Christmas and New Year in India. We’ve slept at airports, boarded 9 flights in less than a month and finally found our paradise. Lyvette has bought the entire southern hemisphere (and a bit more) out of Tiger Balm and we’ve been attacked by piranhas. We’ve seen brown snakes, spiders and now shake our shoes before we wear them. We’ve carried knives, danced for an Indian groom in the middle of the street and driven scooters wearing a mattress. We’ve gone from beaches to backwaters to mountains, through monsoon, extreme heat to (what seemed like) the artic. We’ve collapsed more often than not (cough cough – Lyvette) and been threaded to an inch of our lives. We’ve used more currencies than we knew existed, laughed until we’ve cried and eaten things which may not even be deemed edible. We’ve seen more than we could have ever imagined, experienced more cultures than we thought possible and met more people than we can remember.

Takapuna
Creating memories in Takapuna, Auckland

We’ve done all this and more. So much more. The above is just a measly snippet of what we have experienced in the past two years. These two years have gone so fast and we’ve done so much that it’s hard to remember it all. And it upsets me that I can’t possibly remember it all.

1st June. Two years of memories. Two years of experiences. Two years of living.

Years pass by so quickly and moments disappear instantly. No matter how many photographs we take, no matter how many blogs we write, the memories get hazy. Until one of us says ‘remember when this happened?’ and it all becomes clear again.

Because no matter what we simply can’t say we can remember every single thing we’ve done.

But what we can say is that we have made the most of the past two years. Even the bits we don’t quite remember. We can say that we have had a great adventure. We can say that we have lived. And we can say that this adventure has not yet reached its final chapter.
