Finding Winston – Part 2 (Goodbye Sydney)

The text arrived at 14.32 and I was at work in the Indian.

“I know who Winston is”

My heart stopped. My mouth went dry and my legs began to shake. We’d been dreaming of this moment for four and a half months. I was so excited I threw curry over someone (it was palak paneer, my fave). You can feel my excitement below…

Finding Winston
Goodness knows why it mattered if he sounded Asian or not…

So that was it, the mystery of Winston was solved and Lyvette had been the lucky lady who waved at him. She thinks he was a bit uncomfortable with all the attention but he was a celeb so whatevs. And then our lives became empty. What do you do when you’ve found Winston? How can life in Sydney ever be the same again? That’s when we decided it was a good job we were leaving for Adelaide in a few days time.

Sydney
Sydney

These last few days ended with me saying emotional farewells to my Indian family (I’ve become quite attached) and I had to depart with a cheese naan, chai and a cuddle off my favourite Indian dad (I make that sound like I have lots of Indian dad’s, which is a lie, because I don’t but he’s still my favourite). Then we had our goodbye party that Rob organised with all of our friends that we had never met before. This started with a bbq on the beach and ended with me and Lyvette reclaiming our sofas that we had spent so much time on during our first week in Sydney and that was that. Oh and we passed our all important free coat hangers onto Tania. We tried to give her all of our clothes, including our crotchless India pants and off white vest tops that had travelled from Asia but she wasn’t having any of that. She did however leave with an oversized bag of hangers, our beloved and all important cockroach spray and some permanent markers (we snuck these into her bag because we didn’t want them to go to waste). We were packed up and good to go.

Goodbye Sydney!
Goodbye Sydney! Thanks for the fun times!

So this morning we said goodbye to Sydney and headed off. We actually felt a bit sad, it’s the longest we’ve spent anywhere and we met some great people and had some great times. Naturally in our usual style we almost missed our flight. We’re not quite sure how as we were sat next to the gate, waiting for the queue to die down, but Lyvette was engrossed in reading about Adelaide’s fastest flies and I was busy googling “can you get good corn on the cobs in South Australia”. The next thing we know “LYVETTE BYRNE AND HEATHER JACKSON” was being shouted over the tannoy and everyone was on the plane. Then, once in Adelaide we were on the bus sat next the gobby woman with a weird bobble just stuck on her head (I honestly don’t know what they think fashion is in Australia) who made us all aware of smell of burning rubber and we had to abandon the bus.

We definitely had fun!
We definitely had fun!

So now we are sat in our dorm in Port Adelaide. It’s 8.21pm and the reason we’re sat here is because there’s nothing to do. We were hungry at 4pm but apparently no one else in the port get’s hungry at this time. Or ever. Because everything is shut. The only thing we were allowed was coffee and cake and we didn’t want that. They only do breakfast on Sunday’s and the busiest place was the hairdressers. It’s like being back in Ranthambore in India (except quieter and there are no warthogs running across the road). Obviously I didn’t check to see where our hostel actually was and so didn’t realise it is actually 13km outside the city centre.

Anyway that’s where we’re up to. Now the travelling begins again I’m sure the blogs will get more eventful. I’ve already had 3 flies on my face, the conditioner has leaked all over Lyvette’s bag and as previously mentioned we’re on the verge of starving to death…

Back on the road
Just us two, back on the road!
